Stonham Barns Golf Park aims to encourage new sports skills for children
Following on from the recent Team Europe success at The Ryder Cup in the USA, Stonham Barns Golf Park – at Stonham Barns Park – is introducing a new competition on Saturday 11 October to introduce more children to the game of golf.
The Junior Golf Competition is open to all juniors – no experience required – with trophies and prizes to be won across five age categories – Under 6s, Under 8s, Under 10s, Under 12s and Under 15s (Age categories as of 1 Jan 2025).
Says Paul Dobson from Stonham Barns Golf Park, ‘There has been much excitement around The Ryder Cup, and this puts young people and golf back into the spotlight. We need to encourage the young golfers of the future, and this Junior Golf Competition is well timed to catch the wave of interest from the recent global golf challenge.’
‘We have recently been running a new junior golfing academy at Stonham Barns Golf Park, and it confirmed that more young children than ever are trying the sport with encouragement from parents and friends. It is hoped that this will be the first of a series of competitions to keep children from the area active and engaged in a sport over the months ahead.’
The recently created Suffolk Golf Academy’s new junior golfing academy at Stonham Barns Golf Park is suitable for children aged from 4 – 12. The sessions divided into three age bands – Tiny Putters (aged 4-5), Fairway Explorers (aged 6-8) and Junior Aces (9-12) It is delivered by full time PGA coach Rob Pritchard who specialises in individual performance coaching.
Rob, who is passionate about golf, started his golfing career with a weekend job at Stonham Barns Golf Park aged just 13. He has been involved with the sport for 30 years most notably with Stonham Barns Golf Park. He explains, ‘Playing golf provides an excellent opportunity for children to learn an individual sport while making friends. Some children will enjoy it and take some new sporting skills through life with them while others might go all the way through PGA training to one day become a pro golfer themselves.’
‘We are hoping that the sessions and competitions be popular with both the children and their parents, who will be interested in initiatives to help with their child’s ongoing personal development.’
‘Learning sports skills can often be a life-shaping experience.’
The ethos of the competition and the golf academy is to create an accessible avenue for everyone to try the game, develop confidence and learn in a safe environment. Equipment is provided and coaching can be indoor and outdoor based – depending on the weather.
