With a Springtime boom for fishing and camping!

Narborough Fisheries report busy start to the season as it makes enhancements at venue

Narborough Fisheries, the picturesque 26-acre site located between King’s Lynn and Swaffham in West Norfolk, is investing in its campsite to provide better amenities for holidays in Norfolk for anglers and nature lovers – and enhancing its fishing facilities, including adding a new fly-fishing shelter to allow for changes in the weather!

The venue has reported a 50% increase in bookings for this Spring so far – including Easter – via holiday sites such as Pitchup.com, campsites.co.uk and visit West Norfolk and this is partly to do with the UK’s growing passion for fishing and wildlife breaks.

Says Eric Smith, co-owner of Narborough Fisheries, ‘We are finding that pitch bookings have started to flood in for the start to the season via sites including Pitchup.com and campsites.co.uk.  We think that that this is partly to do with the UK’s growing obsession with fishing and wildlife breaks and people are seeking out the best venues with west Norfolk being at the top of many people’s wish-list.  It is for this reason that we are investing in the future of the centre – our aim is continue building on the success we have had here so far.  It’s one of the jewels in the crown of West Norfolk!’

‘Our message is bring your camera, binoculars and/or fishing tackle and relax in the beauty of the Narborough countryside.  It’s good for everyone’s mental health to be close to nature.’

‘The sunny weather has made a difference too.  Although not consistently warm as we have enjoyed at the start of other season’s, the weather makes people’s thoughts turn to camping.’

‘With challenges in the Middle East people are looking more to the UK than usual for summer and weekend breaks particularly as the economy is being so affected by the fuel price increases – and that’s without mentioning the problems with airport security delays!’

‘It’s looking like an awesome start to the season this year!’

The 5 fishing lakes at Narborough Fisheries offer a mix of fishing with one Trout Lake (Meadow Lake), one Specimen Carp Lake (Millers Lake), a general mixed course lake (Foresters Lake), and a general Match and Course Fish Lake (Ashford Lake) with over 9,000 fish. The delightfully maintained lakes include 18 lakeside pitches all on hardstanding with 16-Amp hook-ups and easy to access facilities – with a newly-constructed fly-fishing shelter. The fisheries have also recently invested in new amenities including improved shower and toilet facilities to ensure a comfortable stay for campers and anglers alike.  These upgrades are aimed at accommodating the growing number of visitors seeing a relaxing countryside escape.

A record-breaking carp was caught in 2025 at the weight of 40lb in Millers Lake at the centre.

Continues Eric, ‘The revival in UK holidays is also partly because people want to get back to nature. With 84% of people in the UK living in urban areas (according to 2024-2026 data), interest in countryside accommodation is enjoying a revival.’

Adds Tim Cowlard, from Narborough Fisheries, ‘We have added a brand-new trout shelter for our fly-fishing visitors to the centre, and this will be very popular with the changeable weather we get in the UK that can sometimes make fly fishing a little less comfortable than course fishing where umbrellas can be used.  We can see this being very much welcomed by fly fisherman in the months ahead.’

‘Feedback from our fishermen is while wet weather gear is available, they would be pleased to be able to benefit from some protection from the elements!’

The venue has abundantly stocked trout and course fishing lakes and is well known among anglers from across the UK.  The lakes are stocked with trout and mirror and common carp, plus many more species including tench, roach and bream.

The park was acquired by its current owners in 2024 and since then significant investment has been made in the facilities there.

Lakeside pitches for camping are available during the low-season from £34 per night and non-lakeside pitches and non-lakeside rally field options from £25 per night.  Day fishing prices start at £10 per person for course fishing and from £26 for fly fishing for trout.

Narborough Fisheries venue is regularly used for charity fishing matches. A three-fly cast charity event was staged in April raising over £800 to help children in extreme poverty in Manila in the Philippines and another match organised by the Countryside Alliance Campaign in memory of Brian Beattie.

Pisces & Acorn Country Park, located in Welney on the Cambridgeshire/Norfolk border, has seen more people choosing to buy holiday accommodation following a stay at the park. It is because holiday makers – and people from the locality – are choosing to get back to nature for short holiday breaks. With 84% of people in the UK living in urban areas (according to 2024-2026 data), interest in countryside accommodation is enjoying a revival.

There has been an increase in bookings for this Spring including Easter via holiday booking sites such as Pitchup.com and HolidayCottages.co.uk and this is partly to do with the UK’s growing obsession with fishing and wildlife breaks.

Says Paul Stanton of Pisces & Acorn Country Park, owned by Chiltern Parks, ‘Fishing and wildlife breaks are the go-to for escapes to the countryside but never before has this been so relevant with global tensions as they are and the new economic pressures on people.’

‘Escaping the cities is what seems to be the new trend as we see visitors delighted to swap traffic noise for tranquil walks, fishing and birdwatching.  It’s the sight of flocks of geese moving across the sky, ducks settling onto nearby waterways and the call of lapwings over the fields that makes it so special.’

‘Here at Welney – home of the phenomenal Welney Wildfowl and Wetlands Reserve and setting for BBC Springwatch programmes – we can offer visitors the rare chance to truly reconnect with nature swapping the sounds of sirens for the soothing sounds of the Fens with its quiet waterways and wide skies.’

‘While we have always been known as an award-winning fishing venue – being fortunate enough to host the legendary Bob Nudd over the years – we are becoming a prime location for wildlife watching too.  From the Wetlands for wildfowl to the countryside for butterflies and birds of prey, there is something here for all nature lovers.’

The holiday park has four abundantly stocked fishing lakes – situated on a 20-acre site featuring beautifully landscaped lawns, shrubs and wooded areas.  This is the ideal location for those who enjoy peace and tranquillity – and above all getting away from busy everyday life. This has become the destination of choice for people from all over the UK since staycations have enjoyed a surge in popularity.

Explaining the link between visitors who rent a property ahead of purchasing a lodge, Paul explains, ‘Lodges cost less than you would expect to purchase but the benefit they bring families is priceless.  A place to escape to whenever you need some family time.  These holiday homes offer outstanding value for money – and that’s key to any purchase with the rise in the cost of living.’

‘More than ever people want to make the most of their leisure time, so many are joining the growing number of holiday homeowners in the UK.’

Established in the 1940s as a tench fishery, Pisces & Acorn Country Park had three lakes heavily stocked with mirror and common carp, pike, tench, roach and bream.  It has won the David Bellamy Conservation Gold Awards for countryside achievement and been recommended by some of the country’s most famous anglers – including Bob Nudd MBE who is now angling ambassador for the park.

The park was acquired by its current owners in 2019 since then significant investment has been made in the facilities there.  The holiday home accommodation on offer has recently been upgraded with many new units for rent and purchase, improvements in the infrastructure and conservation work to enhance the grounds and lakes.’

Continues Paul, ‘Fishing is one of the UK’s largest participation sports and it is great for mindfulness and health.  Getting out into nature is clearly what people want, to live a more fulfilled life, so we are seeing more visitors than usual and more people wanting to invest in a holiday home so that they have somewhere to go wild at the weekends!’

Luxury furnished holiday lodges are available to rent and buy. Rental prices start from £95 per night including fishing and holiday home sales from £34,995 for a fully furnished luxury holiday home.  All accommodation is situated beside a lake.

a celebration of rural heritage, crafts and country pursuits

The much-loved Mid Suffolk Show will be returning to Stonham Barns Park’s Mid Suffolk Showground, promising a vibrant day out that captures the rich heritage of the Suffolk countryside. This year’s event builds on the legacy of previous events such as the Steam & Country Show, bringing together the best of rural tradition and family-friendly entertainment in one spectacular Suffolk venue.

The show on Sunday 26 July is based on countryside interest, heritage, crafts and it will feature a new foodie’s marquee.  The show day – open from 10am until 6pm – will also include vintage tractors, mini steam engines, vehicles and 4x4s for an off-road driving experience, terrier racing, sheepdog and duck trials and a sheep show.  For the children there will be outdoor activities like archery and axe throwing.

Speaking about the event, Janice Rowles at Stonham Barns Park said: ‘The Mid Suffolk Show continues its tradition of honouring the local farming community. Visitors can look forward to a display of vintage and modern tractors, celebrating the evolution of machinery that has shaped the region’s agricultural landscape together with many more highlights. Families, friends and farming enthusiasts of all ages will enjoy interactive demonstrations and learn about the vital role the county plays in our way of life.’

Artisans and crafters from across the county will be showcasing their skills and produce, offering everything from handmade jewellery and pottery to traditional woodwork and textiles. The foodie’s marquee promises to be a feast of local produce, with stalls brimming with fresh, seasonal ingredients and delicious treats that embody the flavours and tastes of Suffolk.

From falconry displays to sheepdog trials, the show brings together the excitement of country pursuits for visitors to watch and enjoy. Experts will be on hand to demonstrate traditional rural skills, offering a glimpse into the craftsmanship and know-how that have been passed down through generations.

There will be live music and showring entertainment throughout the day.

Continues Janice: ‘There’s nothing like a country show to bring in the crowds and we are planning for a special show this year introducing more vintage elements than ever before.  The rural content of the show will include tractor exhibits, country pursuits and all the best crafts and produce from Suffolk. We are hoping to encourage some of the Young Farmers Clubs from in and around Suffolk to come along and join in too.’

‘We are already booking in a wide mix of artisan traders to join us to make the day memorable for everyone.’

‘Whether you are a farming aficionado, a craft lover, or looking for a fun and enriching family day out, the Mid Suffolk Show at Stonham Barns Park will offer something for everyone. Join us in celebrating the spirit of Suffolk’s countryside and enjoy of entertainment, tradition, and community spirit.’

hospitality graduate starts business based on ‘family love’ for baking

Stonham Barns Park – mid-Suffolk’s premier leisure, retail and holiday venue – has added another new and creative outlet to its Retail Village which will officially open on 7 February and promises to bring a new creative offering the local artisan food scene.

Shelby Mayhew, from Great Blakenham, near Ipswich, is the driving force behind Shelly’s Cakes and Bakes.  With a first-class degree in Hotel Management from the University of Essex, and a background as a guest relations manager at Champneys Wellness Spa Resort, Shelby is well equipped to bring her vision to life. Her journey into the world of baking began in her teens, inspired by her family’s tradition of home baking, and nurtured by recipes handed down from her grandparents.

Shelby (31) says it was her mother who taught her how to make her first cake and her passion developed from there until she became an accomplished hobby meets business baker.

After pursuing a decade long career in hospitality – in pubs, bars and restaurants – Shelby returned to higher education four years ago to formalise her skills and now, with the backing of her husband, is turning her lifelong passion into a full-time business.  She explains, ‘I loved working in hospitality, but you need to work very long hours, and I was at a point in my life when I wanted to enjoy each day and have a better work-life balance.  So, the idea of giving up my job and turning my side-hobby into a business became a reality.’

‘Shelby’s Cakes and Bakes has always a part of me since I started baking all those years ago. Now I am in my thirties I feel it is the time to focus on my baking skills.  I will be baking full time to supply the outlet which will be run by two new employees, and we will see how it develops over the months ahead.  I have the backing of my husband who has encouraged me to become my own boss to give me greater career freedom.’

The bakes on offer will include Chocolate and Coconut Cupcakes, Chocolate Orange Cupcakes, Coffee and Walnut Cupcakes, Lemon Drizzle Cupcakes, Speciality Cookies and Cream Cake, Speciality Red Velvet Cake and Speciality Vanilla Cake with Vanilla Cream. The business has a 5-Star food hygiene rating and is fully licensed by Mid Suffolk Council.

‘I have been supplying bespoke bakes as a side-hobby for over 12 years now, catering for any event, season or celebration from weddings to birthdays and baby showers.  I did find that during lockdown there was a huge demand for cakes, bakes and afternoon teas which did consolidate my business offering.’

‘The twist to the story is that I have picked up tips and tricks from watching patisserie chefs at work during my time in hospitality which I think increased my skill set and makes my cakes and bakes both delicious and distinctive.’

‘There is always a demand for delicious cakes and bakes as they bring happiness to everyone – it’s a slice of joy always.’

‘It’s a whole new era for me and I am ready for it!’

Shelby’s Cakes and Bakes will open 6 days a week – Tuesday to Sunday – from 10am – 4.00pm.

For more information about Shelby’s Cakes and Bakes, please contact Shelby Mayhew on 07730 589 600, email shelby.mayhew12345@gmail.com or visit www.shelbyscakes.co.uk

Aspal Antiques Fair will bring an antiques trading day to Stonham Barns Park

Aspal Antiques at Stonham Barns Park – Suffolk’s premier leisure, retail and holiday destination in Suffolk – will stage its fifth antiques fair on Saturday 15 March showcasing antiques and collectables for the home and garden including retro, vintage and other historical items.

The Aspal Antiques Fair will feature a range of established and start up traders from the antiques sector in the region.  It’s free entry to the public and attracts hundreds of buyers from across Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex.

Aspal Antiques – which also operates Aspal Emporium Antiques Centre as well as Aspal Reclamations – is run by Alan Knight and Henrietta Lewis who have developed the business over the past decade attributing its success to being able to offer vintage and antique touches for home and garden refreshes. The business has played host to Drew Pritchard from the TV Series Salvage Hunters who described Aspal Antiques as a ‘real breath of fresh air with products of undeniable quality which are highly affordable’, and the retailer has also had two visits from presenters from the Antiques Road Trip.

Says Alan Knight, ‘We know that the antique buyers and sellers from the region are some of the most discerning in the country, and so we are delighted that the Aspal Antiques Fair has now become a valued part of the Suffolk antiques event calendar.’

‘The visitors who attend the Antiques Fair have commented on the quality of the exhibitors and how they are pleased to have found many and varied collectable items for their homes and businesses.’

‘It is good to see quality is still king and that people are becoming more appreciative of the need to buy and reuse antique and vintage items that will outlast much of today’s modern pieces.’

‘Looking back for statement items is the new interior design movement and we are happy that this development is here to stay.’

‘Stonham Barns Park is now well established as an antiques hub for the region and so we are confident that the Aspal Antique Fairs are good for both traders and the antique buying public – and sustainability!’

Antique pieces are often re-used or up cycled to become a new item of furniture.  It might be that they are incorporated into a table or lampshade or simply painted in a new earthy or bold and vibrant colour.  Antiques are hugely flexible, and items made from oak, cotton, rattan, wicker and metal, sit comfortably side by side in many homes up and down the country.

celebrating imagination, inclusivity and the joy of making art

This summer, Suffolk’s creative community will come together for Boundless Creativity 2026, a vibrant arts festival taking place on Sunday 19 July 2026 at Stonham Barns Park, just a short distance from Stowmarket.

Organised by Sakura Studio Gallery, the festival is designed to celebrate imagination, inclusivity, and the joy of making art – with everyone invited to take part.

Boundless Creativity is not about standing back and watching; it’s about getting involved. Visitors of all ages and abilities will be encouraged to try something new through hands-on workshops, interactive “have-a-go” sessions, live demonstrations, and performances spanning visual art, music, theatre, and dance. Whether you’re a practicing artist, someone who hasn’t picked up a paintbrush in years or want to try something new, the festival offers a welcoming space to explore creativity without pressure or pretense.

A strong community focus sits at the heart of the event. Collaborative art projects will run throughout the day, gradually evolving as festivalgoers contribute their ideas and skills. These shared artworks will not only reflect the diversity of Suffolk’s creative voices but will also help raise funds for local charities.

The festival is also passionate about nurturing future talent. A dedicated Young Artists Showcase will give emerging creatives an opportunity to exhibit their work, gain confidence, and connect with artists and organisations from across the region. Talks and demonstrations from established practitioners will offer inspiration and practical insight into creative careers.

Says Albany Tripp, Founder of the award-winning Sakura Studio Gallery which is a shared exhibition studio for local artists, ‘With support from local and regional partners, the festival promises to be a joyful, accessible day out for families, creatives, and curious minds alike – a true celebration of Suffolk’s Boundless Creativity.’

The exhibition will raise money for local Suffolk charities including Suffolk Sight, Suffolk Owl Sanctuary and Sands, pregnancy and baby loss charity.

‘This project comes from lived experience, resilience and a deep belief that creativity should be accessible to all to support wellbeing, connection and opportunity for all.’

‘Boundless Creativity comes from grief, love and survival and the quiet need to make something together. It isn’t about performance or perfection, it’s about connection, courage and the simple act of making side by side as part of a community.’

Boundless Creativity will be free to attend.  Small donations can be made for taking part in the community art pieces which will go towards the funds raised for charities in the community.

Sponsors are being welcomed to support Boundless Creativity, for more info please contact,

a Fast Track tennis ball and net system will encourage more people to practice          and enhance their game ahead of the new tennis season

Stonham Barns Park – mid-Suffolk’s premier leisure, retail and holiday venue – has added another new sports facility to its fast-growing retail village.

Two indoor tennis ball and net systems will offer tennis training regardless of partner, court and trainer availability.  The new facility – introduced by tennis coach Nick Frost – allows indoor play all year around.  The two side-by-side courts allow training off court for beginners and professionals, from young to old.  It means there is no need to collect the ball and it offers 20 hits per minute or 1200 hits per hour.  The facility is also retailing a wide selection of rackets and balls.

Says Nick, ‘This is a real court scenario – but indoors – which offers a real tennis feeling while participating in intensive training.  It is the optimal system for training for technique and footwork, and it is becoming highly popular with a wide range of players of all ages and abilities.’

Nick, who lives at Stoke by Nayland, has coached tennis for the past 24 years in Suffolk and Essex.  He coaches at Earls Colne, Gosfield and Castle Heddingham Tennis Clubs and is Head Coach at Grundisburgh Tennis Club.  He is LTA, PTR and RPT qualified.

He continues, ‘Indoor tennis training facilities offer significant advantages for players. The Hitting Hut will provide a controlled environment where weather conditions such as rain, wind, or extreme temperatures cannot interfere with practice sessions. This consistency helps players to focus on improving their technique and fitness without interruption.’

‘Additionally, indoor facilities often extend playing hours, making it easier to fit training into busy schedules, especially during the darker winter months. Overall, these benefits contribute to sustained progress and greater enjoyment of the sport.’

‘I am looking forward to introducing this Fast Track Tennis system to the people and players of Suffolk and Norfolk.  It really does enhance development through practice, muscle memory for forehand and backhand play, improved attention span and better balance, coordination and reaction time.’

‘The system is revolutionising the tennis market, and I am delighted to be able to offer it here at Stonham Aspal which is already popular with golfers for the excellent facilities at the venue.’

Nick is looking to develop Pickle Ball and Padel Ball at Stonham Barns Park too but needs to recruit professionals from the newer racket sports to provide coaching to go alongside the facility.  He is selling a range of different rackets at The Hitting Hut too and can give advice on the best rackets for the individuals who are ready to buy into tennis as a sport, or one of the new and emerging racket sports.

Stonham Barns Park is a vibrant leisure, retail, and holiday destination in Suffolk, featuring over 44 diverse outlets, attractions, accommodation, and events for families and individuals. With its creative spirit, welcoming environment and free parking, it continues to be a preferred destination for out-of-town shopping and leisure.

For more information about The Hitting Hut go to www.TheHittingHut.co.uk, email info@thehittinghut.co.uk or contact Nicholas Frost on 07762 483917.

Since its launch, Albany has expanded and evolved the creative hub – extending the studio and adding a wider variety of workshops, social craft mornings and working with her visitors and artists to develop a space that is accessible, affordable and community focused.

Albany says: ‘It is incredibly overwhelming to have won and been nominated for so many awards in less than 3 years since we first launched. When I created Sakura Studio Gallery, I wanted to create something different, to support our local artists, creatives and wider community. I feel like my studio does that, and as a result I am achieving more than I could have ever wished for in terms of business success.’

‘I enjoy the company of other people from the arts community, and we all work together to be the very best we can be. The studio wouldn’t work without our creators and visitors driving it and how we have developed over the last three years. The fact that this has been recognised by multiple awards is the best news of all.’

‘This business allows me to pour myself into doing what I love while being the best mother I can be to my family.’

‘And as a small rural business, we wouldn’t be where we are without the support of our artists and visitors, along with our fellow local businesses and the team at Stonham Barns Park.’

Stonham Barns Park puts a new tilt on the Christmas trip to see Santa

Stonham Barns Park – one of Suffolk’s premier leisure, retail and holiday venues – is putting on something slightly different for little ones and their families this Christmas.

Breakfast with Santa will see children and their parents having a delicious, cooked breakfast with Santa before leaving on a train to an enchanted theatre for a welcome by elves before entering an enchanted grotto to receive a Christmas gift.

Explains Events Manager David Sandpearl from Stonham Barns Park, ‘This is a magical event not to be missed at the award-winning Café 24 (Best Café in Suffolk 2024 and 2025).  The Christmas fun will include a breakfast and a train ride to Santa’s Grotto where Santa will be presenting each of the children with a gift.  The breakfast venue is beautifully set out with a snow scene, Christmas sleigh, elves and more. It’s all about creating memories for parents at this special time of the year.’

‘The experience will be fun for all – and everyone will enjoy a hearty cooked breakfast! It will certainly make for a special start to the festive period.’

The elves who will be on hand on the day to meet the children and adults will include Snowball, Sparkle, Holly and Tinsel.

Children will be able to chat about their gifts and hopes for the coming year with Santa.

The cooked breakfasts will include a vegetarian option.  Pre-booked tickets only at £18.95 for adults and children £13.95 to cover breakfast, train ride and gift.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Breakfast with Santa is available throughout December – on 6, 7, 13, 14 and 19 December until 24 December.  Time slots are 8.30am, 9.30am, 10.30am and 11.30am.

Christmas Markets, Santa’s Grotto and live music bring festive goodwill to families

The first of a series of two weekends of feature-packed and brightly-lit Christmas Craft Market was staged at Stonham Barns Park (22 and 23 November) as the venue looks forward to another two days of festive spirit and fun on 29 and 30 November (from 10am – 4pm).  The two days of festivities will include the opportunity for Christmas shopping and Santas Grotto visits where children can visit Santa’s Grotto and receive a special Christmas gift!

Speaking about the first weekend, David Sandpearl, Events Manager, at Stonham Barns Park, said: ‘As the song goes ‘the weather outside is frightful’ but still the crowds flocked to the Christmas Craft Markets to check out the wonderful goods provided by our local traders selling their festive goods for the holidays.’

‘With over 80 stalls ranging from handmade jewellery, scrumptious cakes, and bath bombs to Christmas decorations, there was something for everyone.  Santa made a visit and welcomed visitors to his Grotto, while the Snow Queen and Elsa were walking around the venue for photo opportunities.  We had live music performed by Whitnee Springfield who entertained the crowds in the Market Square.’

‘For those who missed it, we are doing it all again this weekend from 10.00pm to 4pm each day.  Parking is free so you can stay as long as you like!’

With mince pies, mulled wine, live music and Christmas lights Stonham Barns Park – one of Suffolk’s premier leisure and entertainment venues – will again pull out all the stops again to put on another weekend of shopping and activities for both adults and children.  The Snow Queen, Elsa and some magical elves including Snowball, Sparkle, Holly and Tinsel will be attending as part of the weekends for photo opportunities.

Talented Suffolk exhibitors will bring their handmade crafts, artisan foods and unique wares.  From intricately designed decorations and pottery to scented candles, textiles, children’s toys and gourmet treats, the stalls are a celebration of Suffolk’s creative spirit with some exhibitors offering demonstrations of their skills.

Explains Terri Forward from Stonham Barns Park, ‘Christmas is all about families spending time together and – as always – we are making the season truly magical with our annual Christmas Craft Markets.’

‘The gift and craft retailers attending are offering some delightful gifts and decorations.  Suffolk is known for its creativity, and we will be exhibiting some of the best artists and craftspeople the county has to offer here in one place again at the weekend.’

The markets will feature uniquely handmade, handcrafted gifts and products. In addition, visitors will be able to shop at the retail village which is packed with 1000s of Christmas gift ideas.  There are arts and craft shops, the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary, Carters of Suffolk pottery and newly enhanced tearooms and Legends Bar.

The events offer visitors free parking and free entry.

Tickets for the grotto – suitable for the under 12s – will cost £10 per child.  Advanced booking is recommended, with limited on the day bookings also available.

Other retailers at Stonham Barns Park include Aspal Antiques, Aspal Emporium, Aspal Reclamation Yard, Stonham Garden Centre, Carters of Suffolk, Hemingstone Frames, Hot Tub Village, Tiger Sheds, Stonham Village Stores, Suffolk Bridal Outlet, The Beauty Barn, The Vintage Cellar, The Book Cellar and The Little Dance Barn.  Among the most recent retail additions to the village La 3D Print Artistry, Sakura Studio Gallery, Glen’s Collectables, Ben’s Corals, Emmett’s Emporium and Bella’s Pet Shop.
